Blocking Settlements at the World Zionist Congress

The Hatikvah slate, which NJN helped lead, scored two victories in the fight against settlement expansion this week at the World Zionist Congress.

First, our coalition of progressive and liberal slates successfully passed a resolution preventing the WZO from using any resources for settlement in the Gaza Strip.

Listen to the crowd roar as the resolution barring Gaza settlements passes.

And here is NJN’s Maxxe Albert-Deitch explaining this vote.

Second, the congress also voted on a resolution submitted by our coalition to block the use of WZO resources for settlement activity at E1 in the West Bank. E1 refers to the area east of Jerusalem. The plans for settlement construction there would bisect the West Bank and cut off Palestinian population centers from one another, making a future Palestinian state effectively impossible.

This resolution appeared to get a majority of the vote at the congress, but a procedural objection — which has yet to be fully resolved — is holding up the formal adoption of the resolution.
