Jewish Voices for Trans Rights
Recent years have seen numerous bad-faith religious justifications for regressive, conservative policies. From the rollback on abortion rights to the threats to marriage equality, faith has been used to argue against our rights. That’s one reason we, as progressive Jews, show up for these issues: we won’t allow religion to be weaponized against vulnerable members of our community.
And that’s one reason NJN joined a Jewish coalition rallying for trans rights outside the Supreme Court on Tuesday. Jewish values teach us the equality and dignity of all people.
The rally was in response to two cases being heard before the Supreme Court, West Virginia v. BPJ and Little v. Hecox. These cases target transgender girls and women who want to play on women’s sports teams, a moral panic masquerading as concern over women's safety.
This coalition was organized by Keshet, the National Council of Jewish Women, and the Religious Action Center. We convened at the Supreme Court, heard words from Rabbi Jenna Shaw of Sixth & I, then joined the dozens of secular human rights and LGBTQ advocacy groups outside the court building. The protest ran into the afternoon, continuing as the court heard oral arguments for the cases.
