Trump Can Stop Jewish Settlers Terrorizing Palestinians. This Is How

In recent weeks, mainstream Israeli media has, at long last, joined Haaretz's coverage and begun to focus on the surge of violent settler attacks against Palestinian civilians. Mosques, homes, and cars have been torched. Olive harvests have been stolen. Palestinians have been beaten, terrorized and, in some cases, killed. The number of these attacks has spiked sharply over the past year, even as the West Bank remains locked down by the IDF.

The situation is so grave that Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu felt compelled to issue a rare condemnation. He promised that his government "will take very forceful action" regarding attacks against Palestinians and IDF soldiers. He even convened a special meeting of security officials to explore possible steps.

Israelis responded with a collective shrug. They know Netanyahu's stern language and "meetings with security officials" – meetings that are quickly leaked to the media – are all for show. They are designed to satisfy international pressure, not to signal meaningful change. To be blunt: he doesn't mean it, and they don't matter.
