President Trump should reinstate sanctions on violent settlers. Today's West Bank killing shows us why.

July 28, 2025 — In April 2024, following an extended period in which the Israeli government failed to take effective action to curb settlers known to engage in violence against Palestinians, President Biden instituted sanctions against such individuals. Among the first two sanctioned was Yinon Levy. Upon taking office, President Trump rescinded all of the sanctions targeting violent settlers.

Earlier today, while confronting Palestinians at the West Bank village of Umm el Kheir, Mr. Levy shot and killed Odeh Hathaleen, a Palestinian father of three.

“It is long past time for President Trump to realize that his hands off approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has failed,” said Hadar Susskind, President and CEO of New Jewish Narrative. “Active American leadership is needed to end the war. It is also needed to stop violent settlers from terrorizing Palestinians. Since the current Israeli government has proven unwilling to stop these settlers, the U.S. should reinstate sanctions.”
